We work to understand the interactions of microbes with their environments and with each other, particularly in soil systems. Questions of interest include:

• How do microbial activities impact other microbes in their local environment?

• How do microbes respond and adapt to natural and accidental environmental changes?

• How do certain genes influence environmental fitness?

We use the techniques of microbiology, genetics, and genomics to build our understanding of microbial biology.
